Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between gross pay and net pay?

Gross pay is your total earnings before any deductions. Net pay, also known as take-home pay, is the amount you receive after taxes and other deductions are withheld.

How are federal taxes calculated?

Federal income tax is calculated using progressive tax brackets. Your taxable income is determined by subtracting the standard deduction (or itemized deductions) from your gross income. Each portion of your income is taxed at the corresponding rate for your filing status.

What are FICA taxes?

FICA taxes fund Social Security and Medicare. The Social Security tax rate is 6.2% of your gross income up to an annual wage base limit, and the Medicare tax rate is 1.45% of all your gross income. If you earn over a certain threshold, an additional 0.9% Medicare tax may apply.
