Frequently asked questions
Why is my take-home pay less than my gross salary?
Take-home pay is your gross salary minus taxes (federal, state, and FICA) and any other deductions like health insurance or retirement contributions. These deductions are mandatory or voluntary and reduce the amount you receive.
What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
The marginal tax rate is the rate applied to your last dollar of income, while the effective tax rate is your total tax paid divided by your total income. This calculator uses flat rates, so the effective rate equals the sum of the entered rates, but in reality, progressive tax systems make the effective rate lower than the top marginal rate.
Can I use this calculator for self-employment income?
Yes, but you should enter the correct FICA rate for self-employed individuals, which is typically 15.3% (12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare). Also, you may need to account for estimated quarterly taxes separately.
