Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between BMR and RMR?

BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is measured under stricter conditions (complete rest, fasting, neutral temperature). RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) is slightly less strict and is typically about 10% higher. Many calculators use the terms interchangeably, but BMR is the baseline.

Which BMR formula is most accurate?

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation is generally considered the most accurate for the general adult population. The Katch-McArdle equation can be more accurate for lean or athletic individuals when body fat is known. The Harris-Benedict equation is an older alternative that may overestimate in some populations.

Can I use BMR to plan weight loss?

BMR is a starting point. To lose weight, you need to create a calorie deficit relative to your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE), which includes physical activity. Eating below BMR is generally not recommended without medical supervision.
